Niamh Wright

Jeweller & Object maker

BA Hons Silversmithing & Jewellery Glasgow School of Art.

Statement

Niamh focuses on creating her complex shapes into 3D forms using various modelling software. Inspired by the organic growth of Mother of Pearl, Niamh mimics these freshwater pearls, combining them with her expressive shapes to create her version of this transformative material. Pulling the colours from her paintings, Niamh dyes the Nylon 3D prints to highlight the original emotive source of inspiration. Laser-cut mother of pearl are then embedded into the piece with neon acrylic paint.

Over the past year, I’ve focused on honing my digital design skills through tools like VR and 3D modelling software while also exploring the interplay of natural and unnatural materials in my creative work. Despite my drive as a fast maker, I’ve learned the importance of prioritising my mental health and embracing life experiences outside of my artistic practice, especially after the challenges of navigating my university years during the pandemic. My creative practice is driven by human connection and being around the ones I care about and I think this is important for all makers.
