Scrap Challenge
In April 2010 we held our annual artists’ forum in Rothes Halls, Glenrothes. Our over-arching theme for the event was ‘sustainability’ – how to sustain yourself as an artist, and global sustainability.

Morning talks included an overview of funding opportunities (Carol Sinclair, Cultural Enterprise Office), and how to get press coverage (Craft Scotland’s then CEO Emma Walker). In the afternoon, we had brief update talks from Fife artists’ groups before looking at the wider picture. Talks for this section were by Glasgow-based artist Justin Carter (Reader in Contemporary Art Practice: Art and Environment, Glasgow School of Art), and Sai Murray (writer, poet, performance and graphic artist of Bajan/Afrikan/English heritage).

The content of the Forum was devised through discussion with a group of Fife-based artists. Dot Sim, jeweller & silversmith, suggested holding a Scrap Challenge. Willing participants were to arrive at the Forum with a small selection of their scrap materials which would be randomly swapped during the day.
In the end, 19 artists took part and that summer, an exhibition of their completed ‘new’ works was held beside Fife Contemporary’s office in St Andrews Town Hall.
