Statement

Hailing from Italy, Biolo began her studies in jewellery design at the Liceo P. Selvatico in Padova. After earning her diploma, she moved to Scotland, where she pursued a course in silversmithing and jewellery design at the Glasgow School of Art, graduating with a First-class BA (Hons) in 2023.

Biolo explores themes of trauma and insecurities through her conceptual and narrative collections, developing an interest in the hidden, which she translates into her contemporary designs. Currently based in Glasgow, she works as an independent jewellery artist, participating in national and international exhibitions and residencies. Over the years, she has been honoured with several awards. The predominant characteristic of her creations lies in their simple appearance, eschewing overt symbolism for the public, and instead hiding intricate designs to foster an intimate connection solely with the wearer. She is intrigued by the contrast between smooth, minimal surfaces and the intricate designs she creates within these simple structures. Her work ranges from the sharp, edgy appearance of stainless-steel pins to the playful sparkle of gemstones. The movement and sound incorporated into her designs are further complemented by oxidized outer vessels. Alice’s practice explores the world of contemporary conceptual narrative jewellery. She has created numerous collections for international exhibitions, alongside contemporary everyday wear collections available for purchase at contemporary jewellery galleries, pop-up events, and directly from the artist.

Materials and Techniques

Alice works with a variety of materials tailored to the nature of each project. She incorporates non-precious metals such as copper and steel, as well as found objects like watch parts and broken letterpress type, alongside precious metals like sterling silver, fine silver, and gold. Her expertise includes advanced techniques such as using a laser welder to construct her pieces, which preserves the material qualities of stones and the stainless steel featured in her collections. She also specializes in both traditional and alternative stone-setting techniques, and has recently added Keum-boo to her repertoire—a traditional Korean technique for applying thin 24k or 23.5k gold foil to silver surfaces

Awards

Since graduating, Alice has been based in the Silversmithing and Jewellery department workshop at the Glasgow School of Art, where she was awarded an artist-in-residence position for the 2023/2024 academic year. She has also been offered a second year for 2024/2025. During her first year, Alice actively exhibited her work both nationally and internationally, participating in multiple jewellery weeks and events across cities like Rome, Venice, Milan, Slovenia, Munich, New York, the Netherlands, Budapest, Beijing, Shanghai, London, Edinburgh, Poland, Manchester, and more. She held her first solo exhibition in Graz, Austria, at the end of a summer residency at Plattform Schmuckkunst, where she launched her new project, Never Dare I Say, and led several workshops, including her first in Birmingham. Alice has received several awards and been featured in various articles. Recently, she launched her contemporary wearable collection, Hide, at Shine 2024 at the Goldsmiths’ Centre. She has also participated in multiple professional development and mentoring programs
